It's a good time to pray for terrorist victims!

Since the Board of Education will no longer be providing video-taping for cablecast (effective July, 2002), suspended delivery of the "Molalla River Reporter" and stopped communication with the "Educational Ambassadors" (September, 2002) I have tried to provide information regarding education concerns for interested persons:

Do we get a new stadium?

A very special expression of gratitude to Molalla Branch of the Wells Fargo Bank for their generous support and contribution to the Stadium Committee!  Once again, at the February 14, 2002 regular Board meeting, the Stadium Committee representative appealed to the Board to approve utilizing the $40,000.00 'surplus property' funds from the Bus Barn to fund the Stadium locker room construction.  After citing substantial material and labor donations from the public, and assuring the Board that the $40,000.00 would be sufficient to get construction on the locker room phase of the project initiated and completed to the point that the facility would be framed and weatherized, Rex Wilson stated that May would be the deadline to begin construction in time for use in the 2002-2003 school year.  He also pointed out that not only the football team, but the girls' athletic teams and the public would benefit from construction of appropriate restroom facilities.  There was also the possibility, when renting portable toilets, the district may be compelled by participants in high school athletic competition to secure more appropriate facilities at district expense.  The Board indicated that they wished to have a net cost proposal prior to making a decision.

Regrettably, as of the January 10, 2002 regular Board meeting, the MRSD Board of Education has consistently voted against proposals to use funds from 'surplus property' to assist in the funding of the new stadium.  The Board voted against an offer to purchase the Buckner Creek property timber at a price which would've been more than fair (considering less than premium timber and it's diminishing value plus the fact that the site would've been replanted with good stock for future timber sales).  Evidently some Board members believed that the "District doesn't really need the money right now anyway".

At the December 13, 2001 and January 10, 2002 Regular Meetings of the MRSD Board of Directors the suggestion was made that the District apply the funds from the sale of the old bus barn to provide capital to get construction started on the new Locker Room Facility.  Although we've already ordered the new lockers for the new facility there is still a prevailing opposition to any funding for the athletic facilities.

At the regular MRSD Board of Education meeting, August 9, 2001, the Board made it clear that they expected the community to raise the funds to build the new Stadium, Locker Room and restroom facilities, but that they would assist with fund-raising efforts.  This willingness to assist was demonstrated by the Board's motion to guarantee the funding of the new lockers until the balance of funds could be raised for this purpose.

The Molalla River School District Board of Education, at the July 12, 2001 regular meeting, has declared the Buckner Creek property 'surplus property' and allowed Larry Owings to investigate the sale of the property and/or timber.  The proceeds of this sale would, hopefully, be applied to Stadium costs and/or Facility Maintenance and Safety.
