Term: shell
Definition: an outer layer of a program that provides the user interface, or way of commanding the computer. Shells are typically add-on programs created for command-driven operating systems, such as UNIX and DOS. The shell may provide a menu-driven or graphical icon-oriented interface to the system in order to make it easier to use.
