Glossary of Data Communications Terms

Term: block
Definition: a group of digits, characters, or words that are held in one section of an input/output medium and handled as a unit, such as the data recorded between to interblock gaps on a magnetic tape or a data unit being transmitted over a data communications system; a block may or may not contain control information. A group of N-ary digits, transmitted as unit. An encoding procedure is generally applied to the group of bits or N-ary digits for error=control purposes.
